The National Library of Medicine explains Telehealth as the use of technology-based virtual platforms to assist various aspects of health information to aid preventive healthcare, monitoring, medical care, and assistance (Oren J. Mechanic, 2022). Telehealth actively benefits both the health and convenience of the patients. 

The Surge of Telehealth During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Telehealth became a breakthrough throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, as it suggested social distancing and quarantine to avoid the virus outrage through any means communicable. It held researchers accountable to suggest and study Telehealth as an integral part of the medical industry. In early March 2020, the American Congress took progressive action to expand telehealth access through Medicare. This action improvised the Telehealth industry, increasing the access of remote healthcare during the pandemic lockdown and quarantine (government, 2020). Before the legislation, absolute integration of Telemedicine in the United States remained low with complex logistics. 76% of US hospital systems implemented telehealth and telemedicine within the fields of radiology, cardiology, and psychiatry, which noted highest users of the modality. 

Telehealth and its Role in Accessibility and Equity

Based on research and the thriving industry, Telemedicine, despite being well received by multiple patients and health care providers, remains more accessible to a certain group of patients than others. The implementation of SARS-CoV-2 in the United States by March 2020 helped break through many of the barriers to telehealth. This encouraged trust and reliance on remote health care and monitoring among the citizens. Telehealth began playing a more prominent role in advancing health equity as people could access healthcare services with geographical disadvantages without having direct access to them. It encouraged proper communication and coordination across time and space, bringing more equity by providing health care to the patients (Craig Kuziemsky, 2022).

Moreover, it enabled earlier interventions for chronic conditions like hypertension, diabetes, and mental health concerns, improving outcomes and patient satisfaction.

Telehealth has shown strong potential in reducing overall healthcare costs. By minimizing unnecessary hospital visits, decreasing travel expenses for patients, and enabling earlier interventions through remote monitoring, it contributes to a more efficient and streamlined care system. Virtual consultations and follow-ups have also saved providers valuable time and resources while improving patient satisfaction.
